Shifting the focus from RPA to AI: A Conversation with Ericsson

Mature companies across the Nordic region are beginning to shift their focus from Robotic Process Automation (RPA) tools to Artificial Intelligence (AI). With 60 business processes now handled by their in-house OneOffice platform and hundreds of AI patents to their name, Ericsson are just one of the companies leading the way with their digital transformation. The Nordic region’s companies are still hugely varied in the stages they are at in their automation journey. We spoke with Alexander Hübel, the current head of Ericsson’s Global Automation and AI transformation team about their own automation journey, their drive towards becoming an automated business and how Ericsson’s current position compares to the rest of the region.

Ericsson's IA Journey

Ericsson are at an undeniably mature stage in their digital journey. Robotics have received executive attention from Ericsson for a number of years and since then have been playing a successful role in the automation ecosystem at the company. Though Ericsson have been automating their local network operations for many years, recently Ericsson have been focusing on developing a OneOffice platform which now currently handles 60 business processes across the company’s 20 main units. This platform is already showing significant results, with one bot enabling a value cost of close to $5 million. Alexander explained that the majority of Ericsson’s robots are currently unattended RPAs that affect G&A back-office functions, supply chain or telecom.
